SMS use case
Last updated: June 2026
Overview
TableChime uses SMS for transactional, one-to-one communications between a customer and the venue they are ordering from. SMS is delivered via Twilio. This page describes our SMS use case, opt-in flow, opt-out flow, sample messages, and message frequency.
Use Case
TableChime is a QR-based ordering platform. When a customer scans a QR code at a participating venue, they may open an ordering session (“tab”) on their phone. SMS is used to:
- Resume an open tabfrom a new device (e.g., the customer’s phone restarted or they switched browsers). The customer receives a one-time link to rejoin their open tab.
- Confirm a submitted order with the items ordered and the total charged.
- Notify of order statusin venues that support customer-facing status updates (e.g., “your order is ready”).
We do not send marketing or promotional SMS without explicit, separate opt-in. The use case is transactional only.
Opt-In
When a customer opens or joins a tab through the TableChime ordering interface, they provide their phone number along with a display name. The opt-in is presented as follows:
- The phone number field is labeled clearly and is optional in venues that do not require identity for tab resume.
- Adjacent to the phone number field, the customer sees: “By entering your number you agree to receive transactional SMS related to this tab. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to opt out.”
- The customer must affirmatively tap the “Start tab” or “Join tab” button to submit, confirming opt-in.
Opt-in is voluntary. Customers may complete purchases in-venue without providing a phone number.
Opt-Out
Customers may opt out of SMS messages at any time by replying STOP to any TableChime message. Upon receiving STOP, we acknowledge the opt-out with a final message and immediately cease all further messages to that number.
Customers may reply HELP for assistance information, which includes contact details for support and a reminder of opt-out instructions.

Message Frequency
Message frequency varies based on order activity. A typical visit results in five or fewer messages (one for opening the tab if resumed by SMS, one per submitted order, one for tab close). Customers do not receive recurring campaign messages or daily/weekly summaries through this use case.
Carrier Disclaimer
Standard message and data rates from your carrier may apply. TableChime does not charge customers for SMS messages directly, but your wireless carrier’s standard rates apply to messages sent and received.
Data Handling
Phone numbers are stored only to enable the transactional messages described above. We do not share phone numbers with third parties for marketing purposes. Phone numbers are retained for up to 12 months from the last use or until opt-out, whichever is sooner. See the Privacy Policy for full data handling terms.
